Why do we have a Summer Reading Program?

When young people aren’t engaged in educational activities during the summer, they experience learning loss.

Reading just 5 books over the summer can prevent summer learning loss.

Students who participate in a summer reading program have better reading skills at the end of third grade and score higher on standardized tests than students who do not participate.

Summer reading loss is cumulative. By the end of 6th grade, children who consistently lose reading skills over the summer will be two years behind their classmates.

CYCLE are proud to sponsor the Houston Public Library Summer Reading Program! Once signed up at any of the participating Houston Public Library locations, two children at each location will have the chance to win a brand new bike! The bikes for High School/Middle school were donated by PON NA earlier this year, there is also a smaller bike available for Elementary aged students. #ReadtoRide
